History/Overview
Introduced in 2014, the BMW 4 Series is effectively a 3 Series coupe/convertible by another name. A four-door Gran Coupe model arrived in 2015 to blur the line between what differentiates a coupe from a sedan, but since a second-generation 4 Series arrived in 2021, that body style is only available as the all-electric i4. We expect the combustion-powered Gran Coupe to return later this model year.
There’s also a high-performance M4, which is covered in a separate buyer’s guide entry.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
There are no major changes to the 4 Series for 2022, save for some shuffling of features in and out of the car’s option packages.
Available Trims
BMW offers the 4 Series as a coupe and convertible, and in 430i and M440i designations powered by turbo four- and six-cylinder engines, respectively. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed transmission are standard.
Standard Features
The BMW 430i’s engine has an auto stop/start function, along with a remote starter. It also comes with 18-inch wheels, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, a sunroof, auto-dimming rearview and side mirrors, and power-adjustable heated front seats. Adding safety and convenience are front and rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, auto on/off LED headlights, automatic high beams, dual-zone automatic A/C, and digital gauges.
BMW’s driving assistant is included too, with adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, a lane control/keeping assistant, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and blind spot monitoring with lane change warning.
M440i models add 19-inch wheels, a heated steering wheel, sport brakes and differential, seats with adjustable side bolsters, sport suspension, and an aerodynamics package.
Key Options
In the 430i, you can add items like a heated steering wheel, fog lights, and passive keyless entry with the premium essential package.
Surround-view cameras come with the premium enhanced package, as does an automatic trunk, ambient lighting, a drive recorder, a head-up display, and lumbar support.
A premium excellence package brings a sensatech dashboard, laser headlights, and galvanic controls. BMW also lets you add a couple of different M Sport packages to the base model.
In the M440i, an advanced driver assistance package adds a traffic jam assistant, and more sophisticated driver safety assist features.
Fuel Economy
BMW’s fuel consumption estimates for the 4 Series are 10.0/7.1 L/100 km (city/highway) for the 430i, and 10.4/7.4 L/100 km for the M440i.
Competition
The BMW 4 Series’ competitors include cars like the Audi A5, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Lexus RC, Jaguar F-Type, and Infiniti Q60.
